West Des Moines Mourns the Loss of Beloved Community Member Jeanne Townsend Dawson
West Des Moines, Iowa — The West Des Moines community is mourning the loss of Jeanne Townsend Dawson, a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and neighbor who passed away peacefully over the weekend from natural causes.
Known affectionately as Jeanne Townsend to many who loved her, Dawson was a longtime resident of West Des Moines whose warmth, kindness, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She was deeply devoted to her family and took great pride in her roles as a mother and grandmother, always placing loved ones at the center of her life.
Dawson was a graduate of Valley High School in West Des Moines and went on to study at Simpson College, where she continued to develop the values of compassion, community, and service that would define her life. Those who knew her recall her as thoughtful, gracious, and genuinely interested in the lives of others.
As a neighbor, Jeanne was a steady and caring presence — someone who made her community feel more connected simply by being part of it. Friends and neighbors remember her for her warmth, her listening ear, and the sense of comfort she brought to everyday moments. She passed away yesterday, January 10.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Gerry Scott, who was her partner and constant support. She is also lovingly remembered by her extended family and many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Jeanne Townsend Dawson’s passing leaves a profound absence, but her legacy of love, kindness, and connection will continue to live on through those she touched. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

I don’t want to believe it. she was a lot of fun. I hadn’t seen her in years. Facebook is great , it keeps you in touch with each other. damn it.
I remember our years together in school. I’m so thankful for FB where we reconnected like time had not passed. She will be missed by many. RIP Sweet lady 🙏❤️
Jeanne was such a peaceful soul. She was so talented in so many areas of her life. I met her when I was in 6th grade(she was in 4th). We lost touch while I was in the Army & got back in touch through Facebook. I’m in shock that she’s gone now. May God rest her soul in peace. I will miss you, my precious friend & sister.
